Welcome to My personal Story with Autism
I am excited to be playing in the 2020 CAN Pro-Am Hockey Tournament!
Held January 24-26, the tournament will raise vital funding for Canucks Autism Network (CAN). CAN is a provincial leader in sports & rec programming for individuals & families living with autism. They are committed to promoting autism acceptance, understanding & inclusion through community engagement & training initiatives across BC.
I would love to share my personal experience with autism with you. I have a first cousin who is autistic and when I was a young I remember babysitting him all the time. We used to play lots of video games and watch movies together. This was the first autistic person I had met and wasnt exactly sure what that had meant. Being only like 10 years old myself I felt a little uncomfortable at first but I soon realized that he was special. I remember he started playing video games like Mario at a very early age and soon started to excel at them. I couldnt believe how capable he was at doing so many things but comunicating with him was very hard. I remember getting very frustrated with him at times and even getting angry. As he got a little older his communication skills never seem to get any better and he never really fully developed his speach. By the time I was 15 he had moved to Ontario with his mother's family and I had lost contact with him. Both of us had lost our parents and our lives went in very different directions but I miss him and often thnk about how he is doing. I wish now I could go back because I would be more patient and understanding. People sometimes think that having autism is a disability but I believe it can also be viewed as an ability. All I remember how happy he was all the time and his brain worked in some amazing ways that I could never understand. I know he seemed caught up in his own world most of the time and tuned out but that is not necessarily always a bad thing. There are a lot of things going on on this world that I wish I could tune out and stay as happy as he always was. I am participating in this tourney to help any autistic kids who would like to play sports and who would otherwise not get the chance to. I have been playing hockey and many other sports since I was 5 years old and now I get to do something I love and also help others get to do the same! Feel free to donate what you can whether its a $1 or $100. Anything is appreciated! Thank you!
By participating in the CAN Pro-Am, I will be helping to ensure that thousands of individuals with autism can also enjoy the thrill of sports province-wide!
Please join me in making a difference.
